At Lifting Stars Veterinary Homecare, we understand that your pets are cherished members of your family. National Pet Fire Safety Day on July 15th is a perfect reminder to ensure our homes are safe for our furry friends. Here’s how you can help protect them from the dangers of a fire.
House fires can spread rapidly, putting everyone at risk, especially pets who might hide or get trapped. A little preparation can make a big difference in ensuring their safety.
Preventing Accidental Fires
Pets are curious creatures and can accidentally start fires. Older pets, who may not be as steady on their feet, might bump into or knock over cooking equipment. To prevent this, keep pets away from stoves and countertops. Candles, lamps, and space heaters should also be out of reach.
Always use a metal or heat-tempered glass screen on fireplaces and keep pets away from the chimney’s outside vents. Consider creating a “pet-free zone” at least three feet away from the fireplace. Remember, glass doors and screens can stay hot for hours after the fire goes out, and even a quick nose to the glass can be extremely painful for your pet.
Safer Alternatives
Flameless candles, which look and smell like real candles, are a safer alternative. Additionally, watch for pets that like to chew, as they might chew through electrical cords. Have any issues checked by a professional to prevent fire hazards.
During a Fire
If a fire occurs, stay calm and follow your emergency plan. Help pets evacuate if it’s safe to do so, using leashes or carriers to prevent them from running away or hiding. Close doors behind you to slow the spread of fire and smoke. Never go back inside for pets; inform firefighters immediately if a pet is trapped inside.
Wildfire Safety
Include pets in your family’s wildfire evacuation plan. Build an evacuation kit for each pet, ensuring it’s a manageable size and weight for quick loading into a vehicle. These kits should include a food supply, first aid kit, and any necessary medications.
Interesting Fact
Did you know pets and wild animals are responsible for starting about 700 home fires annually? Most of these fires are caused by cooking equipment, fireplaces or chimneys, lighting, or candles.
